Release notes

What's new in each version of RELAX.

v0.0.4

Latest

A big release for the player: sound fixes, a seek bar you can actually drag, louder audio, much better subtitles, and keyboard shortcuts.

Fixed: no sound on many movies. Files with Dolby Digital (AC3 / E-AC3), DTS or TrueHD audio played silently on Apple Silicon Macs without Rosetta. RELAX now ships a native media inspector, so these files are converted on the fly again and play with sound. This also brings back audio-track switching and built-in MKV subtitles on those Macs.

Seek bar

  • Grab and drag the seek bar. A time label follows your cursor, so you know exactly where you'll land.
  • The playhead jumps to the new position immediately when you let go or click, and "Buffering…" shows while that part of the movie loads.
  • Dragging and holding ←/→ no longer floods the stream with requests, so seeking is noticeably smoother.

Louder, clearer audio

  • Volume boost up to 200%, for when a movie is just too quiet.
  • Night mode: louder dialogue, softer explosions. Great for late nights and laptop speakers.
  • Both live in the ⚙ menu next to playback speed, and are remembered.

Subtitles

  • Online subtitles now show their file or release name (e.g. The.Matrix.1999.BluRay.1080p…) instead of "English" for every entry, so you can pick the one that matches your copy.
  • Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing are marked SDH.
  • Built-in MKV subtitles now work for the whole movie, not just the first few minutes, and keep working after you seek.
  • Subtitles appear and disappear in sync with the picture, instead of up to a quarter-second late.
  • Wider subtitle menu, so long names stay readable.

Player

  • Remembers your volume, mute and playback speed between movies.
  • Playback speed no longer resets to 1× after seeking or switching audio tracks.
  • Media keys and macOS Now Playing: control playback from your keyboard's media keys, headphones or Control Center, with the title, episode and poster shown.
  • The episode (S · E) button now fades away with the other controls instead of sitting over the picture.

Streaming & reliability

  • Faster start for files that store their index at the end, common with MP4s.
  • Better download prioritisation around where you're watching, especially after seeking.
  • If a converted stream drops out early, playback now picks up where it stopped instead of ending and marking the movie as watched.
  • Watch progress is saved reliably, including when you pause or close the player, and for movies with Dolby/DTS audio (which previously didn't save at all).
  • Smoother playback overall: less background work while a movie is playing.

Requirements

  • macOS 12 (Monterey) or newer on Apple Silicon. Intel Mac and Windows builds are still coming soon.
